Clamping systems are the interface between the machine tool and the workpiece. They define the workpiece position, guide the flux of force, and thus determine the quality of the finished workpiece. Because of their close proximity to the workpiece and thus the machining process, clamping systems with integrated sensors offer a promising possibility for monitoring of machining processes. Due to its position in the working space, clamping systems operate under harsh environmental conditions, with contact to chips and coolants. In particular, hydraulic
actuated clamping systems can be subjects to wear phenomena at the piston surfaces and seals when overloaded. Therefore in addition to the process control, monitoring of the system state is given an important role. The warranty of an intact system state and an automated check of the clamping situation improve the profitability of a clamping
system by preventing failures, e.g., loosening of components during processing, and the production of rejects, considerably. The integration of sensors in clamping systems, however, results in several challenges: The sufficient sensor sensitivity, the harsh environmental conditions including electromagnetic interference, and the power and data transfer at applications with rotating machine tables.
