Mixed ceramic tools based upon Al2O3 + TiC are successfully applied in hard machining cutting processes. For an increased tool life of carbide tools, e. g. flank face undercuts have proven advantageous. As they cannot be generated by abrasive methods, laser machining was used to produce these intricate geometries. At cBN and cermet tools additional chemical and physical effects during laser machining lead to a better performance. The recent work reports about the effects of laser machining on phase composition, surface roughness, and residual stresses of mixed ceramic cutting tools. Cutting experiments with tools before and after laser machining have been executed in the form of external cylindrical turning of EN-GJS-400-15. Tool wear has been investigated and is discussed.
