Due to increasing quality requirements in industrial applications, research activities are focused more and more on the interaction between manufacturing process and machine structure. Especially geometrical errors, surface roughness and process instabilities belong to the main research topics. By increasing the understanding of interaction phenomena, process parameters can be improved and with these the quality of the product. This paper deals with the interaction of machine structure and grinding process during the manufacturing of high end mills and drills, see Figure 1a. Because of the thin workpiece and high material removal the stiffness and cross-section area of the workpiece changes strongly which takes effect on the static and dynamic behavior of the system. To predict the system behavior a mechanical structure model is built up.
