Beschreibung

Residual stresses are one of the most important factors to determine the life of cutting tools. Compressive stresses in PVD-coatings are generally held to be responsible for longertool life, unless a certain stress maximum is exceeded. In the presented work special PVD-coatings with a constant residual stress state, without a steep residual stress depth gradient, are used for orthogonal turning tests of AISI 1045 under different conditions. Tool life investigations under consideration of feed and residual stress are performed in order to determine the optimum residual coating stress for a certain process.
