Today's methods for process planning in the production sector usually focus on the technical resources of a production system like machinery or material. Up to now, a systematic integration of individual skills of the production workers is not further considered – possibilities for optimized job-assignments and skill development “on the job” are neglected. Against this background, a new method for competence-based process planning for the industrial production has been developed combining approaches from two scientific areas: engineering and vocational education. In this paper, the general concept and relating methods are developed. This allows a requirements-description of the work tasks and the subsequent matching with the needed competencies in relation to the operational targets like production costs and flexibility.
