Numerical Control (NC)-Simulation systems are used to test and optimize cutting processes. For this purpose, submodels of all relevant parts of the machine-tool and the manufacturing process are required. Among them are models of machine-tool geometry, its kinematic structure, a model of the NC-Unit and the workpiece. This paper focuses on the development of a numerical control model as this is responsible for the planning of the tool trajectory and is thus important for process analysis. Since machine-tools can be equipped with NC-Units of many different types, a numerical control model needs to be modular to be adapted to various numerical control types. This article presents a concept for an adaptive and modular numerical control model. Furthermore realistic motion planning algorithms are introduced and their integration into the modular structure is described.
