Fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), especially carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP), are regarded as a high-performance material of the future. The rapidly increasing demand, with growth rates of 17 % per year, does not come along with suitable production facilities for machining.

The objective of the research project Effective is therefore the first-time development, research and demonstration of an efficient, intelligent and cost-effective production plant for machining FRP and multi-material workpieces by means of a combination of conventional machine tool and robot technologies with the advantages of the individual systems and an integrated view of these in the new machine tool. Intelligent control concepts for dust exhaustion and the use of lightweight materials in the machine structure can save 25% of the energy costs of today's machine tools. In addition, the optimization of the design reduces machine costs by more than 25 % in order to make the production of components made of FRP competitive and suitable for mass production.
