How can dental products from the dental industry be automatically polished? What was previously only possible manually and on the basis of experience-based knowledge shall now be realized at the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) on a machine tool.

 

The aim of the research project "CAxPoli - Technological CAD/CAM chain for automated polishing of geometrically complex workpieces" is therefore to automate the planning and execution of toolpaths during the polishing process. To achieve this, the workpiece surface is measured before machining. Based on the measured surface topography, the first processing steps are determined by a planning algorithm. A roughness model is used to predict the machined surface.

 

The planning algorithm is embedded in the institute's own simulation software IFW CutS in order to select the appropriate machining strategy depending on the situation. Based on the feedback of the machining results, the process is adjusted and the prediction is continuously improved. Processing can be continuously improved through the resulting enrichment of data.
