On 4 September 2025, manufacturers of clamping technology and machine tools gathered for the biannual Round Table on Clamping Technology organised by the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW). The online event provided a platform for participants to discuss current challenges and future trends in the industry.

The event centred on the specific requirements for clamping solutions in large-scale machine tools. Workpieces in this field often weigh several tens of tonnes, creating unique challenges.

As Dr Birk Brockmann from the Herkules Group emphasised, the automation of clamping technology offers considerable potential: in addition to increased productivity, it also significantly improves workplace safety. Moving away from manual set-up towards automated processes not only reduces the physical strain on operators but also distances them from potential hazards.

Insights into current IFW research were provided by Jannes Vornkahl, who presented the recently completed project FGL-Spann. The aim of the project was to develop an innovative clamping mechanism for milling spindles based on shape memory alloys. This novel actuator technology extends the service life of clamping systems and eliminates the need for a hydraulic unit – a crucial step towards more efficient and resource-saving tool clamping.

Register for the next event

The next Round Table on Clamping Technology will once again take place online in spring 2026. Manufacturers of clamping devices and machine tools interested in participating are warmly invited to register by e-mail at RunderTischSpanntechnik@ifw.uni-hannover.de.
