Starting out in Research: Voluntary Scientific Year at the IFW

Are you interested in technology, mechanical engineering or research – but not yet sure whether this is really the right thing for you? Then the Voluntary Scientific Year (FWJ) at the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools (IFW) is a good choice. You can apply now (application deadline: 31 January 2026).

The FWJ offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of science and technology for a year – right after graduating from school. You will work at a real research institute, learn about modern machines and measuring systems, program, carry out simulations and assist with exciting projects. Unlike a school internship, the FWJ gives you deep insights into current research work and allows you to gain practical experience that will help you in your future study or career choices.

What to expect at the IFW

You will work with engineers who are researching innovative topics in production engineering. Among other things, you will:

  • Learn about CNC machines and measurement technology
  • Apply simulations, AI models and programming
  • Prepare components and test facilities
  • Support conferences and teaching events
  • Experience how an idea becomes a real research project

This will give you comprehensive insight into the world of production engineering – from theoretical planning to practical implementation.

Why the FWJ is worthwhile

  • You will gain real professional experience in a technical and scientific environment.
  • You will learn about state-of-the-art machines and digital tools.
  • You can find out whether a technical degree or training programme is right for you.
  • You will establish contacts with scientists and students.
  • And: you will contribute to the future of research and innovation.

Comments on the FWJ

Participants from previous years, such as Jonathan Meyer (2025), report enthusiastically about their experiences: ‘I particularly enjoy the mix of working on the computer and actively working in the test field. It's fascinating to see how a process that you simulate on the computer works exactly the same way on the machine.’

Who can apply?

The FWJ is aimed at school pupils who are about to graduate and would like to gain a year of practical experience in science and technology. The programme is particularly suitable if you are interested in mechanical engineering, engineering sciences or computer science – or are simply curious about how research really works.

Procedure and application

  • Duration: 12 months (always starting in August or September)
  • Application: by 31 January of the starting year
  • Organiser: Hannover Medical School (MHH)
  • Place of assignment: Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools (An der Universität 2, 30823 Garbsen)
