Abstract

The metastable coating material (Al,Ti)N candecompose into stable modifications at elevated temperatures. This effect can lead to enhanced compressive residual coating stresses. This paper investigates possibilities to adjust the effect locally by a laser heat treatment. PVD-coated carbide cutting tools are laser machined and applied in cutting tests. Their wear behavior is investigated in comparison to as-coated tools.
