MIC 2022 - A platform for exchange between industry and science

On November 30 and December 01, 2022, around 100 international participants attended the 22nd Machining Innovations Conference for Aerospace Industry (MIC). Experts and scientists presented new developments and trends in aerospace. The main topics: Innovative trends, developments and manufacturing technologies for aerospace components, Sustainability of tooling materials and process chains for the aerospace industry, Digital applications: Costs and Benefits, and Data Generation and Management in Automated Machine Networks. After a two-year online format due to the Covid 19 pandemic, this year's exchange could again take place in presence.

The Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) of Leibniz Universität Hannover and the Manufacturing Innovations Network e.V. (MIN) had once again invited to this year's MIC, thus providing a platform for discussion and exchange.
In addition to presentations from industry and science, there was once again the obligatory guided tour of the IFW test field as well as a poster session with current research results from science. In a separate exhibition area, companies from the manufacturing sector showed their innovations. A panel discussion with renowned experts from science and industry rounded off the conference program.

Prominent keynote speakers opened the MIC conference days.

Dr.-Ing. Martin Röhrig, Head of Factory of the Future & Demonstrator at Airbus Operations GmbH, opened the first day with a presentation on necessary measures for sustainability. Reducing the ecological footprint of corporate activities, responsibility for the environment over the entire life cycle and the role of the industrial system were the focal points of his presentation. An insight into the further development of manufacturing was provided by the keynote lecture by Dr.- Ing. Christoph Gey, Vice President Metal Cutting Technology at Kennametal Europe GmbH. In his presentation, he explained the role that the production of carbide will play in the future aerospace industry and what the recycling chains for it will look like. The day was closed by a keynote speech by Mr. Christian Thönes, CEO of DMG MORI AG, on the topic of "Process Integration Completed". Topics included solutions for the holistic production process from production planning to machine maintenance.

The second day of the MIC was introduced by the scientific keynote lecture of Prof. Dr.- Ing. Martin Wiedemann, Executive Director of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Here, too, the focus was on the climate impact of air traffic. Among the topics discussed were the CO2 impacts of various aircraft classes and the existing potential for energy savings. Furthermore, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Konrad Wegener, Executive Director of the Institute for Machine Tools and Production (IWF) at ETH Zurich, referred to tool concepts and theories for cutting fiber-reinforced materials.

"A successful event that we will continue," says IFW Director Professor Dr.-Ing. Berend Denkena.

An event is only as good as its speakers and participants: IFW would like to thank all speakers and participants for exciting presentations and good discussions. And: The date for next year's MIC has already been set. Be there. We look forward to welcoming you at PZH on November 29 and 30, 2023.
