Golden Doctorate: IFW congratulates Professor Sankaran on his doctoral anniversary

Concentrated experience: Together, Prof. Hans Kurt Tönshoff (left), jubilarian Prof. Devarajan Sankaran (center) and Dr.-Ing. Horst Göhren (right) are 263 years old.

In July, Professor Dr.-Ing. Devarajan Sankaran celebrated his 50th doctoral anniversary. Sankaran was the first scientific employee hired by Professor Dr.-Ing. Hans Kurt Tönshoff as the then director of the IFW. And: He was the first candidate to earn his doctorate under him in 1973. The topic of his dissertation: "On the solution of the assignment problem in production engineering with the aid of pseudo-boolean methods".

However, there was no discussion of pseudo-boolean methods when the anniversary was honored on August 1. Instead, our staff enjoyed a humorous lecture with tips for everyday work, which Professor Sankaran always conveyed with a twinkle in his eye.

Sankaran's personal visit, despite his long journey from Leipzig, shows how strong the bond between former colleagues of the IFW is. Especially nice: His doctoral advisor Tönshoff moderated the IFW colloquium in honor of Sankaran. And: Dr.-Ing. Horst Göhren, Sankaran's former boss at Gildemeister Automation GmbH, was present at the tribute.

Among other things, Sankaran was a member of the management board there from 1981 to 1985. He then spent around 23 years at Siemens AG, where he was responsible for supply chain management and most recently served as senior vice president.

In addition to his main duties, Sankaran is also involved in voluntary work. Since 2016, he has been a board member of the registered association "Together against Cancer." He was also, for example, a member of the Board of Trustees for a Saxony open to the world for many years and an honorary professor at the Technical University of Hanover - now Leibniz Uni.
