Professor Berend Denkena takes over WGP presidency

The head of the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) is the new president of the WGP, the German Academic Association for Production Technology, since January 1st 2018. His special focus will be on teaching, the 2-degree climate target and exchange with other scientific societies.

The German Academic Association for Production Technology, (WGP: Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Produktionstechnik e. V.) is an association of leading German production engineering professors. 64 members from 37 university and Fraunhofer institutes stand for around 2,000 scientists in production technology. The WGP represents the interests of research and teaching in production technology towards politicians, business representatives and the public. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of production and production science for society and for Germany as a business location.

Professor Berend Denkena has been a member of the WGP for 15 years and was its vice-president until the end of 2017. On 1 January 2018 he took over the presidency from his predecessor Professor Eberhard Abele of the TU Darmstadt and is now for two years at the head of the renowned and well-connected scientific society. Professor Peter Nyhuis, head of the Institute of Production Systems and Logistics (IFA), which, like the IFW, is also part of the Hannover Centre for Production Technology, is assisting him as the old and new Vice President for Financial Affairs.

The WGP''s commitment to the central theme of "digitisation of production" is outstanding, and overall he finds "functional and forward-looking structures and themes", says Denkena.

He mentions three issues that are particularly close to his heart during his term of office:"As President of this network, I would like to invest in the development of an excellent teaching system; I would like to work to ensure that production technology makes its contribution to the" two-degree climate target ", and I hope that we will intensify the exchange with neighbouring scientific societies".
