5G wireless technology for secure data exchange in production environments

5G – a universal communication for production

The exchange of data and the networking of production facilities are playing an increasingly important role these days. 5G radio technology makes it possible to establish fast and secure data connections. In the project "IT Security in the Use of 5G in the Production Ecosystem", the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools (IFW), together with the Institute for Assembly Technology (match), the Institute for IT Security (ITSEC) and the company ATS, are working on implementing wirelessly networked production securely. In the accompanying 5G Lab Hannover, interested companies can benefit from the findings and receive support in implementing their own ideas.

Many people are familiar with the term 5G from mobile phones, but only a few know that the technology behind the new mobile communications standard can also be used in an industrial environment. 5G offers advantages not only in large areas, but also in production halls, where the capacities of Wifi solutions reach their limits. Nevertheless, many companies hisitate to use the new technology. The project "IT security in the use of 5G in the production ecosystem" is therefore investigating which steps are necessary to achieve a simple and secure implementation in the production environment.

The special consideration of non-technical aspects ("human factor") is intended to show what has so far created barriers towards the new technology and how these can be removed. To achieve this, the ATS Elektronik GmbH, as a radio technology expert, is contributing expertise to the project. In the process, a dedicated 5G network is being created at the Garbsen campus. So the investigation of the communication of various systems can be done on site.

The project is accompanied by the open 5G Lab Hannover, where external companies can also find out about 5G in production free of charge. This will kick off with a one-hour online information event on 19 October.

"In our open 5G Lab Hannover, we give all interested companies the opportunity to find out first-hand how the implementation of 5G technology for connecting production facilities can succeed. In doing so, we not only want to present the results from our project work, but also support the companies in implementing their own ideas and create a space for exchange among themselves," says reserarcher Heiko Blech.
